I went through other websites ( as far as 2006) and I found just one, which was little different:
Amanda Chudnow uses a Philadelphia map as a background for her site. Composite picture in the header nicely fits in the overall design (if she made this picture herself, it is very impressive)

The rest of the class final project sites are the same (different coloring and content). Layout, navigation, site functionality are virtually identical. Is it because of project requirements, which limit people's creativity or the focus of this course on creative content rather than web design? Perhaps, it is simply what is expected of a student, the scope of the class. Your thoughts?

I tried getting inspiration from previous classes too. I saw lot of sports themes. Hmm...
I give students in the class a template they may choose to use for the final site, based entirely on CSS layout. It is not a requirement, but as you see, most students choose to use the template, adapting mainly colors, fonts, graphics, etc.
While we do spend a fair amount of time learning CSS in this class, I feel that the "standards" used by various browsers in displaying CSS are so inconsistent that requiring original CSS layout would be too much for the scope of this class.
The actual requirements for the final web project include using valid XHTML and CSS, no tables for layout, good visual design principles, original content, and strict respect for intellectual property.
Within those guidelines, you have much flexibility! --ELC
I'm hoping that I'll be able to put a little more design flair into my website, too. I don't like making pages that look like they came off a template. Once I finish my final projects for my archives class (being taken through Temple U.), I'm going to be able to devote a lot more time to it.
